Yes the FP2 head will fit on the FP1 dovetail, however the FP1 dovetail is shorter which means the head overhangs at the front, not a good idea. The main reason the FP2 slotting head cannot be used directly on the FP1 or it's riser block is because the FP2 drive gear teeth have a different pitch and module.

Some additional detail information: As has been pointed out the later dial shift FP1's have a "40" taper spindle. There is some range of opinion here but the "40" is stronger and was the same taper used by th larger Deckels from their inception so it might be seem as more modern and a plus.

I'm trying to disassemble a Deckel FP1 slotting head, and I can't figure out how to separate the head from the ram. I remove the 4 nuts (so the head will swivel), and try to separate it. A small gap opens up (~1/16"), but that's it. I don't want to force it in case I'm missing something. Any tips? By the way, this is an older style slotting head.

Teryk, I just made some similar drive rings for DIN69871 tool holders, see this thread. The slot in my tool holders is 16mm wide (0.630") but I made the drive dogs 15.9mm wide (so 0.004" undersize) mostly because the two stock Deckel drive rings for SK40 S20x2 tooling which I own are both undersize by 0.1 or 0.2mm.
However, in the case of my machine the vertical and slotting heads are fitted with 14.5° gears to mesh with the original Deckel gearing. Although purchased over two years ago the machine has been stored in the garage until I commenced the rebuild in September last year, although some preparatory work was undertaken earlier.
